Initiated in 2018 by Dilmah Founder, Merrill J. Fernando, ‘The Endana Nature Corridor Project’ aims to create a seamless migration path for endemic species of plants and trees between the fragmented Iharakanda and Walankanda Forest reserves. This remarkable project is one of the most effective ways to link habitats, resulting in several environmental benefits such as ecological restoration and increased biodiversity. The success of the ‘Endana Nature Corridor Project’ has made it a model for future large-scale nature corridors. Its accomplishments, which include uprooting tea plants that divided the two forests to incorporating livelihood upliftment programs to encourage the sustainable use of forest resources, have been instrumental in achieving this status. The ‘Endana Nature Corridor Project’ is a testament to our vision to showcase exemplary approaches to conserving nature and promoting ethical practices within the tea industry.
From providing an array of ecosystem services to contributing towards human wellbeing, bees play a crucial role in maintaining the planet’s life support systems. In recognition of this fact, the Dilmah ‘Bee A Keeper’ program was implemented to promote the sustainable use of bees in agriculture with a special focus on raising awareness about the importance of bees and their links to biodiversity. With objectives such as monitoring bee declines and creating replicable beekeeping models to uplift communities and livelihoods in Sri Lanka, the ‘Bee A Keeper’ program operates through six hubs across the island. The program, supported by the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, is divided into different focus areas ranging from research to project implementation to education, mangrove conservation and farming to community engagement. By working together towards sustainable beekeeping and community upliftment, the ‘Bee A Keeper’ project has made significant strides in promoting biodiversity and sustainability in Sri Lanka.
Curated to empower and challenge stereotypes, the Women’s Development Program (WDP) provides marginalized women and young girls with skill development and entrepreneurship training to break through the cycles of debt, disability and poverty. From training in sewing, cooking and gardening to supporting women with business skill development and providing grants through the ‘Small Entrepreneurs Programme’, the WDP by the MJF Foundation offers a nurturing space for women to thrive, support and inspire one another. Informal discussion groups moderated by qualified professionals provide a safe platform for women to speak up and share their concerns on several issues, including gender-based violence, home management, finances and personal hygiene. The Swashakthi Bakery and Tea Room was set up to be run entirely by the women of our WDP, selling affordable and wholesome food to the everyday consumer. The Women’s Development Programme is one of many examples of the MJF Foundation’s dedication towards integrating disadvantaged people into society by providing them with equal and fair opportunities and skills to develop and grow.
